Apex Legends had very little marketing before its release and yet it managed to garner over 25 million players within its first week. What makes Apex Legends so great is it blends the hero squad shooter with the Battle Royale genre.
It’s also set up in the same universe as the Titanfall series. Apex Legends gives you 8 diverse and interesting characters to choose from, each with their own abilities and stories. It also has a very innovative ping system that allows you to communicate with members of your team without the need for a microphone.

Apex Legends is available for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. According to Respawn, there are plans for possible future cross-play. Whether or not we get cross-play in the future, Apex Legends user/player base and popularity ensures that you’ll have plenty of competition and players to interact within the game.
Its game mechanics, unique story, connection to the Titanfall universe, number of characters, weapons, Respawns relationship with the gamers and slick graphics are why Apex Legends has landed itself on the number one spot on our list of best battle royale games.
Despite all the controversy surrounding it, Fornite is still one of the most popular games of all time. It currently has over 250 Million registered players which is a record breaking fact. Just to put this number into perspective, that’s two-thirds the size of the entire US population.
Fortnite’s popularity can be credited to YouTube and Twitch culture. These days, games are marketed by streamers and larger than life internet personalities. Its popularity among streamers is one of the reasons why it’s such an omnipresent name among the gaming community.
It would be disingenuous to only attribute Fortnite’s popularity to the monkey-see-monkey-do sensibilities of pop culture. It’s actually a very fun game. Its cartoonish aesthetic and fun game mechanics are more to blame.
Its Battle Royale version has up to 100 weapon-less players airdrop from a “Battle Bus” into an all-out winner takes all slugfest. Players are allowed to play alone, team up in a duo or in a squad which usually consists of three or four players.

It’s a popular belief that PUBG was the first real Battle Royale game. In truth, PUBG was the first mainstream Battle Royale games. Before it, there was Mine Craft: Hunger Games and Z1’s zombie survival mode but there were never as popular as the phenom that PUBG is.
The game was based on a set of mods created by Brendan "PlayerUnknown" Greene for other games. Under the creative direction of Greene, the developers (PUBG Corporation) created a standalone game that would one of history’s most popular games of all time.
PUBG has a combined user base of over 400 million registered players. Over 227 million of these are active monthly users. That’s impressive for a game that came out in 2017.
But PUBG has always tried to keep things fresh. In 2018, they added a third map called Sanhok and the winter map Vikendi. The developers also added a few new features like dynamic weather and bullet penetration.
At its core, it’s your basic Battle Royale game. In the game, up to one hundred players parachute onto an island and scavenge for weapons and equipment to kill others while avoiding getting killed themselves.
The available safe area of the game's map decreases in size over time, directing surviving players into tighter areas to force encounters. The last player or team standing wins the round.
PUBG is ever-changing, so you can expect new modes, weapons, vehicles and even more maps in the near future which means PUBG will probably still maintain its popularity as one of the best Battle Royale Games of all time.

AI-controlled zombie enemies also spawn at Zombies-themed locations, such as Asylum or Lighthouse, and upon being killed drop Zombies loot items, such as the Ray Gun or Cymbal Monkey. Several vehicles, such as the ATV and helicopter, are also available for traversal around the map.

The games were further split as separate projects in October 2017, with Just Survive dropping the H1Z1 name, and King of the Kill becoming simply H1Z1.
Much like the other games on this list, Z1 is a Battle Royale game where Players start each match by parachuting in from a random location above the map. Once they land, they must search for a way to defend themselves. This can take the form of anything from grabbing a weapon and actively hunting other players, to hiding while other players kill one another.
Vehicles are placed throughout the world, allowing players to chase down opponents or make a quick getaway. Players can scavenge a variety of supplies from their surroundings, including weapons, equipment, and first aid kits.
The game also features a crafting system that allows players to create makeshift tools, such as deconstructing scavenged items into functional bandages or body armor.
As the game progresses, a toxic gas cloud compresses the map, dealing damage to players who remain in it.
This effectively makes the playable portion of the map smaller, so that players are eventually forced to confront one another in close quarters. The gas spreads in timed increments, dealing a greater degree of damage in the later stages of the match.
Z1 is well developed, you can see it by how well polished the entire game and environment is. It’s one of the most feature-rich Battle Royale games you’ll find. It’s available for Microsoft Windows and PS4. An Xbox One version has yet to be announced.
You’ll find that the majority of the games on this list have been console and PC based with a few offering secondary versions for mobile platforms. Players are allowed to choose their starting position with their parachute. Just like other Battle Royales, it has a shrinking safe zone which players need to stay in at all times. Drive vehicles to explore the vast map, hide in trenches, or become invisible by crouching under grass.
Depending on your device, Free Fire has great graphics and some really smooth gameplay. The controls are easy to use and master. It also has in-game voice chat and allows you to play solo or create your own squad of up to 4 players.

Counter-Strike: Global Offensive (CS: GO) was first released for Microsoft Windows, OS X, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3 on August 21, 2012, while the Linux version was released in 2014.
Danger Zone, the Battle Royale game mode was introduced in 2018. The Danger Zone players get a chance to go against up to 16 or 18 other players.
Everyone starts with a knife and a tablet and have to search for weapons, ammunition, equipment, and money. Through the tablet, players can purchase certain weapons, ammunition, and equipment with money found around the map inside buildings and in completing objectives such as returning hostages to the rescue zones.
When a player purchases an item, it is delivered to them from a drone that goes to their location and drops the item. The tablet is also used for tracking other players. The last person or team alive wins, like other battle-royale games.
There is not much we can say about the counter strike series that hasn’t already been said. If you’re a fan or Counter Strike and Battle Royale games, CS: GO Danger Zone introduces a beautiful free-to-play amalgamation of the two.
Realm Royale is one of least known Battle Royale games in the genre, this is because it’s still one of the youngest. Initially, it was well received with popular streamers such as Ninja playing it. Due to the removal of its class-based character system, it lost 98% of its user base. Since then, using a few updates, it’s recovered most of them and found some new fans along the way.
The game plays similarly to other games in the Battle Royale genre, in which 100 players drop down from an airship and must traverse a shrinking safe area, collect equipment such as weapons to fight and eliminate opponents, and aim to be the last remaining player.
In the Squad play mode, players are grouped into teams of four against a total of 100 players. A crafting system allows found items to be broken down for materials to make better items or abilities at fixed locations found on the map called Forges, which often become contested by many players.
The game includes a battle pass, known as the "Primal Awakening" until January 16, 2019, when the second season, known as "Steel and Shadow" debuted, that rewards players with character cosmetics. There are 4 classes. Each class has specific "talents" in which you level up your character to earn them. They provide cooldowns and damage/power buffs to certain weapons and abilities.
You have access to any weapon or ability you want, but certain characters are stronger with a certain weapon or ability.
Realm Royale is available on Windows PC, Xbox-One and PlayStation 4. If you want a free-to-play battle royale experience that isn’t bogged down by too many players, we highly recommend Realm Royale.
Darwin Project is a free-to-play multiplayer online battle royale game developed and published by Scavengers Studio.
It was developed using the Unreal Engine 4. In terms of story, it takes place in a dystopian post-apocalyptic landscape in the Northern Canadian Rockies. As preparation for an impending Ice Age, a new project: this half science experiment half live-entertainment, is launched.
Ten prisoners are spawned into a snowy arena made up of 7 tiles all including different environments varying from Tree Houses, Lava filled zones, and many more. The game is run by the 11th player aka The Show Director, equipped with powers to make the game more interesting for the ten prisoners fighting for their lives.
The prisoner can choose to play as a male or female prisoner, they are equipped an ax, a bow, and arrows. They also have three choices of equipment: bear traps, cage traps, snowballs, hooks, gliders, and trip wires. Players can use electronics that can be granted by the show director, or rewarded by getting the first kill of the game.
The electronics are used to make powers for the prisoners to give them advantages in fighting or fleeing. Players can choose how to play throughout the arena by choosing different variations of builds. Builds include your arrow type, three equipment you use, three electronic powers you have equipped, the type of ax, cloak, and boats you run will also change the play style of your prisoner.
It’s quite an interesting concept. The Darwin Project is worth keeping an eye on. Hopefully, a future version will be released for the PS4. As for now, players can play I for free on Steam as well as Xbox Live. Its Best in our list of free battle royale games.
Last but not least on the list comes Rules of Survival (ROS). Much like Garena Free Fire, it’s a mobile exclusive Battle Royale game. It’s extremely popular as the developers claim to have over 150 million players registered globally. Although it only has 1,644,712 downloads from the Google Play Store.
In 2018, the game was released on Steam so PC players also have a chance to play it.
Rules of Survival follows the standard form of the battle royale genre, where players fight to be the last person (or team) alive. Players can choose to enter the match in different modes: Solo, Duo, Squad (four players), or a Fireteam (five players).
In either case, the last person or team left alive wins the match. There are two playable maps in the game: Ghillie Island (120 players, 4.8km×4.8km) and Fearless Fiord (300 players, 8km×8km). There are also different game modes such as the Gold Mode, in which the player can earn gold or the Diamond Mode in which players may earn diamonds throughout the match.
The introduction of the Fearless Fiord game map introduces a new type of match, the Blitzkrieg, in which players will land only on a certain part of the map equipped with a pistol, a backpack, and basic armor. Blitzkrieg is meant to make players clash head-on.
Players can also loot killed players for their gear. In third-person mode, players can switch between third-person and first-person perspective. At the completion of each round, players will receive in-game currencies based on survival length, number of players killed by the player and the player’s level. The currencies can then be used to purchase supply box containing cosmetic items for character or weapon customization.
